The AP is in the process of officially calling election results across the country. While many important elections, such as the Los Angeles mayoral race, are still to be called, here’s what the AP has officially declared so far.
Robert Luna has once again defeated Alex Villanueva for the position of L.A. County Sheriff. The result was called at 9:42 p.m. PST, and it mirrors the results of the 2022 midterms where both Luna and Villanueva faced off and Luna won. Luna, who previously served as chief of the Long Beach Police Department, has taken approximately 70% of the votes this time around.
Besides the County Sheriff, the rest of the main local elections are yet to be called.
Statewide results show a clear dominance of Democratic Party candidates, both expected from California and in line with the country’s overall Democratic sweep.
Democrat Xavier Becerra won an overwhelming majority of the vote for California Governor. The AP called Becerra’s victory over Republican candidate Steve Hilton almost immediately after the 8 p.m. voting deadline on Tuesday. Estimates show Becerra won 63.98% of the votes.
Democrat Rob Bonta has been reelected for Attorney General, called 8:28 on Tuesday. Bonta beat Republican candidate Michael Gates and will continue serving for the position he has held since 2021.

The House of Representatives will reflect California’s undeniable preference for Democratic candidates. Out of the 52 seats given to our state, 41 have been called for Democratic candidates while two have been called for Republicans. Out of the nine still uncalled, seven are expected to go to Democrats. If predictions are correct, Republicans will have lost eight seats in the state, which could be attributed to the success of Prop 50, which aimed to redraw the congressional map of the state in favor of Democrats.
Fiona Ma’s victory in the race for Lieutenant Governor of California was called at 8:28 p.m. on Tuesday. Ma, who had served as state treasurer since 2019, beat Republican candidate and ex-Democrat Gloria Romero, who had previously served as State Senator from 2001 to 2010.
The race for Secretary of State was called in favor of Shirley Weber at 8:58 p.m. Weber was appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom back in 2020 and beat Republican candidate Donald Wagner for her reelection.
Democrat candidate and former Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis won the race for State Treasurer over Republican candidate Jennifer Hawks. The race was called Tuesday at 9 p.m.
The race for State Controller was also called in favor of the Democratic candidate. Malia Cohen is expected to beat Republican Herb Morgan with 63.8% of the total votes in her favor. This race was also called by the AP at 9 p.m.
State and country results will continue to be called throughout the next few days. The overall country results show a historic Democratic dominance, with unexpected results such as the Texas Senate flip.
Most local elections are still too early to be decided. While Nithya Raman is currently holding a very slight lead over incumbent Mayor Karen Bass for the L.A. Mayoral race, the results could go either way.
